Testing Window

About the HIV testing window: 4 weeks after exposure about 50% of people have made the antibodies for HIV. By 6 weeks after exposure, this goes up to about 95%, however, some people don't make these antibodies until up to 12 weeks after infection. This is why it is so important not to rely on a negative test result until 3 months after your most recent possible exposure. Urgent cases should be seen by the GU Clinic and details on how to make an appointment can be found here.

Warning

WARNING: If you are on HIV treatment you may get a false result. Clinical data has not been collected to demonstrate the performance of OraQuick® HIV Self-Test in individuals that are undergoing PrEP.

Remember that nowadays, HIV treatment is so advanced that people with HIV live an active and healthy life, with a normal life expectancy. Being on treatment also means that the viral load becomes so low that it becomes undetectable, and untransmittable. It also means that people on effective treatment do not develop AIDS.
